Migration, Transcription, and Songs of Freedom

This Zoom event, with a live component for folks in Los Angeles, will combine art, conversation and song. In presenting Erik Moskowitz and Amanda Trager’s new Song-Portrait project, the event will connect surprising adjacencies between Nova Scotia, Los Angeles, Mexico, Jamaica and Africa through storytelling and song.

Tofighi, and the digital release of Parafictions Research Journal 1 by Holly Harrell and Misael Oquendo. We will discuss both new publications in a conversation moderated by Jan Tumlir.

Call Card the exhibition, was on view at LACA from May 15–June 12, 2021. The exhibition catalogue, edited by Hugo Cervantes and Kate Rouhandeh and designed by Ted Gerike, collects contributions from Miko Revereza, Moyra Davey, veronique d’entremont, and Alison Strayer.

If not home focuses on the idea of connecting to a place that no longer exists. Not physically, per se, but the consideration that a place changes over time; that environments change. Altered by the passage of time itself; by people, by politics, and other factors. No place is really as you left it.

This exhibition features a small fraction of the beads Shikwana has made over the course of his life, and pairs them with writing from Asshaq.

Private Practices: AAPI Artist and Sex Worker Collection

LACA has initiated Private Practices with curator Coco Ono, co-producer of Sacred Wounds, which highlights healing-focused celebrations of Asian perspectives through erotic ritual. The archive that LACA and Ono have established is a living collection, meaning that items—such as screenshots, paystubs, apparel, set pieces, police reports, text messages, and other ephemera pertinent to sexual labor—will be added on an ongoing basis. The contributors to this collection have actively described the materials in this archive by cataloguing and entering their own keywords; therefore, they play an active role in shaping the narrative of the holdings and the collection as a whole.

Unlike past holidays at Los Angeles Contemporary Archive (LACA), this year we are unable to all be together. So, we’re considering different ways of being close.
21 Minute Mix brings together mixes by artists, musicians, archivists, and DJs, to assemble songs of love and longing to share with others.
The mix will go LIVE February 14th 8PM PST on LACA’s Vimeo and be available on LACA’s online database thereafter.
